The Signdance Collective is a touring performance company that was established in 2001. The company is culturally diverse with a team of experienced deaf and disabled artists at the helm. From 1987 to 2000, the company directors pioneered "signdance theatre", a fusion of sign theatre, dance, and live original music. Since 2001, Signdance Collective has continued to evolve signdance theatre initiating international collaborations and working alongside innovative artists, theatre philosophers, and performance companies across the world. The directors at Signdance Collective have worked with hundreds of people of all ages throughout the UK and internationally, delivering workshops, and producing new work. The company is one of the first in the world to utilize and introduce the concept of inclusive practice with a specific focus on disability-deaf-led teamwork.
The company's first phase from inception during 1987 through to 2000 was followed by a second phase as a UK-based international group from 2001 onward. Whilst remaining consistent with the original mission statement as a core guiding principle that informs all that we do, we continue to create new and original work. Established in London and Amsterdam, the company continues to be a unique, critically acclaimed, and innovative international ensemble. We are based at Wycombe Arts Centre in the United Kingdom.
The work is in demand both in the UK and abroad. SDC performs for more than 25 weeks and 100 shows per year. We have strong partnerships in Europe and further afield. Because of our strong collaborative international network, Signdance Collective has become one of the most active international touring disability arts companies in the world. We have regular residencies and are currently working on long-term partnership projects with "Transmitter" in Graz, Ana Monro in Slovenia, Wycombe Arts Centre in High Wycombe, "This Project" in Wrexham, LMM productions, New Jersey in the USA, "ETHOS" Festival in Ankara, Turkey, "Juggling Gypsy" in Wilmington, USA and Middlesex University in London.
SDC is known for mixing art forms to create 'innovative and creatively brilliant performances', Diversity Awards, BBC.
