Signdance Collective is a culturally diverse touring company established in 2001 with experienced Deaf & Disabled and diverse artists at the helm. Inclusion and diversity inform the artistic process.
In 1987 its directors trailblazed SigndanceTheatre, fusing sign-theatre, dance and live original music. Since 2001 we have undertaken cultural exchange/international collaborative practice, producing and touring our work nationally and internationally. Live music, digital images & poetry play a vital role in the work. The company started in London within the grassroots Deaf Community- and Isolte De Graal, a Cuban/disabled dancer, as its first creative director. Alongside our touring, it is vital to the company to enable people in our community in High Wycombe and across the UK to have access to participation, engagement, exchange and employment opportunities.
As company-in-residence at Wycombe Arts Centre, we are a crucial part of the community and a source of pride. SDC is essential for community development and well-being. We continuously engage local artists and residents with our residencies and international work.
We rehearse and premiere our international touring productions at our home, Wycombe Arts Centre. Here, local/national communities & artists meet, engage with the international artists employed to work with SDC, and are inspired to create. We also develop platforms where local national, and international diverse and disabled people in the community and artists can collaborate.
International collaborations inform all our work, and this knowledge is shared with our communities and strategic partners through workshops and residencies. Please visit www.signdanceeurope.com for European Connections and Signdance Europe.
